What is the Convention on the Rights of the Child?

In 1989, the United Nations General Assembly approved the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This agreement promised to protect the child’s Rights.

the Convention on the Rights of the Child works on behalf of the United Nations Children’s Rights to monitor the implementation of the provisions of the Convention by member states

the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted and offered for signature, ratification, and accession under the United Nations General Assembly resolution on November 20, 1989. Its implementation began in 1990. It also consists of 54 articles.

The most important rights contained in the Convention on the Rights of the Child

-Protecting children from all forms of physical or psychological violence, harm, abuse, abuse, or exploitation, including sexual abuse.

The agreement also deals with several rights of the child, such as the child’s registration immediately after birth and his right to have a name and nationality. Protocols supporting the Convention on the Rights of the Child

The Optional Protocols are an addition to the agreements concluded with the former and are used to deal with the issue of the previous agreements in more depth, to keep up with any new or emerging concern; Or to add any procedure to the work of the agreement.

The protocols are also considered optional, due to the obligations. They may require greater matters than those in the basic agreements. Each country must decide whether it wishes to ratify and sign it or not.

In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly approved two protocols to increase the protection of children from violence during armed conflict. In addition to protecting children from sale, exploitation, and prostitution in pornography. A third protocol was added in 2014 allowing children to file complaints and appeals.

Protecting children from armed conflict

This protocol comes to assure the protection of children (under 18) during armed conflicts . By ensuring their protection and that they do not participate in the fighting in any direct capacity.

Protecting children from sale and sexual exploitation

This protocol protects children from sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as protecting them from sales for hard labor, illegal adoption, or organ theft.

Allow children to file complaints and appeals

This protocol allows children from ratified countries to use the convention to obtain justice when the state’s legal system is unable to protect their rights from discrimination. This comes through the submission of complaints by children to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which has powers in terms of legislation investigations regarding the violations mentioned.
