Since the onset of the Israeli assault on October 7, 2023, children in Gaza have been living in catastrophic humanitarian conditions. According to reports from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, 39,384 children have lost one or both parents, including 17,000 who have been orphaned of both, making this the largest orphan crisis in modern history.

Searching for Safety Among the Ruins

These children now live in tattered tents or destroyed homes, with almost no access to social care or psychological support. Many suffer from deep psychological trauma — depression, social withdrawal, and persistent fear — all intensified by the absence of safety and stable guidance.

Care Efforts Clashing with Harsh Realities

Despite ongoing efforts, aid has reached less than 30% of orphaned children due to the sheer scale of the crisis and the continuous Israeli aggression. Governmental bodies are striving to provide essential needs — food, medicine, and psychological care — and to coordinate with partner organizations and UN agencies, even under severe restrictions imposed by the occupation.

Voices from Within the Pain

Ten-year-old Bassem Ahmad represents the heart-wrenching reality of Gaza’s orphans. He lost his parents and brother in an airstrike on their home and now lives with his sister, trapped in a state of mental disorientation. His aunt, now his caretaker, shares: “He’s in a constant state of confusion… terrified the bombing will return.”
